Il copyright fu sviluppato nell'era del torchio tipografico e
fu progettato per adattarsi al sistema centralizzato di riproduzione delle
opere imposto dalle macchine dell'epoca. Ma il sistema del diritto
d'autore mal si adatta alle reti informatiche, e solo punizioni
draconiane possono farlo rispettare.
Le corporazioni globali che traggono profitto dal copyright stanno
esercitando opera di lobbying per attuare queste
punizioni draconiane e per incrementare i loro poteri in materia di
copyright mentre soffocano l'accesso pubblico alle tecnologie.
Ma se speriamo seriamente di adempiere l'unico scopo legittimo del
copyright, ossia la promozione del progresso a beneficio di tutti i
cittadini, allora occorre ridurre i poteri di copyright o sostanzialmente
eliminarli, a seconda del tipo di opera.
I governi devono proteggere ora il diritto pubblico alla copia.

to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by the printing press.
But the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only
draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from
copyright are lobbying for draconian punishments, and to increase their 
copyright
powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously 
hope
to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote progress, for 
the
benefit of the public--then what must be done is either to reduce copyright
powers or effectively eliminate them, depending on the kind of work.
Governments must now protect the public's right to copy.
