:: WHAT IS DYNE:BOLIC ?
dyne:bolic GNU/Linux is a live bootable distribution working directly
from the CD without the need to install or change anything on
harddisk. It can recognize most of your hardware devices and offers a
vast range of softwares for sound and video production, streaming, 3d
modeling, peer to peer and filesharing, deejaying and veejaying,
games, a world navigator with detailed maps and factbooks and much
more ;)
Surf, stream and broadcast both sound and video; record, edit, encode
and stream, all just in one CD you have simply to boot.
:: CHANGELOG
we are now entering the BETA series of dyne:bolic !!
all interested users are invited to try out the new beta version and
contribute bugreports: it's easy, refer to the BUGREPORT section below.
this new version is adding important features and bugfixes!
we had many downloads of the stable version so far, now everybody is
encouraged to download and try this new version widely expanding the
possibilities offered by the dyne:bolic GNU/Linux bootable CD and
improving stability and performance over the old stable version.
here is a list of changes for this version:
= 1.0 beta
- New NESTING mechanism that lets you save your /home
and data on harddisk or usb storage, also with pass
protection thru AES128 filesystem encryption.
- Localization support: many languages now supported
- New network configuration tool
- Support for automounting of usb dongles and cameras
- new softwares: ffmpeg, WPrefs, figlet, arp, xf86cfg,
trommler, mkfs tools, cfdisk, badblocks, dosfstools,
grip, gcombust, silc, dvgrab, kino, vic-openmash, exim
- updated softwares: mplayer-0.90, mozilla firebird,
rezound-0.8, gmudix-0.10, MuSE-0.8.1-cvs, FreeJ-0.5.1,
HasciiCam-0.9.1, cinelerra-cvs, xpdf-2.02pl1
- new libs: quicktime, openquicktime, Xvid
- new games: foobillard, cannonsmash
- more documentation
- rewrite & cleanup of major parts of the rc files
- fixes to:
automount module loading, many new vga cards,
soundcards when secondary dsp is present (bttv),
cupsd, windowmaker configuration, /etc/modules*,
resolv.conf, csh, freej, iptables, monitor refresh,
logging and bugreporting, shutdown and cd ejection,

:: ROADMAP
Welcome people to the beta software funk :) in the first two weeks of
august, after an extensive fulltime development activity for jaromil,
dyne:bolic GNU/Linux entered the BETA software stage - implying a
feature freeze and a shift of the development from implementation to
bugfix.
So now d:b is very near to its final shape and it looks like it
acquired much personality. many are the differences among other
distributions:
- you don't install dyne:bolic on your harddisk neither add
applications, it just comes as is out of the box,
== it works and that's it
- you don't have large quantities of applications to solve a single
task, no need to lookup different implementations and learn multiple
softwares doing the same thing.
== dyne:bolic chooses for you, if you choose dyne:bolic
- this distribution specifically focuses on multimedia production and
broadcasting, advanced technologies for communication and such.
== by narrowing the goals you can get deeper in what you do
be sure dyne:bolic will keep in this directions, focusing on its
peculiarities instead of overlapping other projects, keeping
compatibility with all the game consoles it will be possible to support
(we all hope that XBOX support is just a good start) and of course
including all the softwares developments at dyne.org ! :)
last but not least, jaromil also developed a full set of custom
configuration tools in dyne:bolic, all coded from scratch in C and GTK+,
so expect to see d:b becoming more and more user friendly than before,
thanks to dyne.org good experience in software development.
:: NESTING - highlight on our new revolutionary feature
What in dyne:bolic is called NESTING is a truly revolutionary approach
to the way operating systems have been shaped so far, and dyne:bolic is
the first (and so far only) distribution really implementing it.
The concept is simple: you don't install anymore the whole operating
system and applications on your harddisk, but just your data and
configuration settings. If you want to upgrade your system you simply
have to get a new CD! all the rest of the data stays. besides a save of
space on your storage devices, this approach also means better stability
and avoids any possibility of misconfiguration of the system.
Furthermore, the way NESTING is done is very efficient: you just create
ONE FILE of the size you want, on the partition you choose (on the
harddisk or usb pen), no matters which filesystem you have (works also
with windows on your harddisk). the file will be called 'dynebol.nst'
and will store all your data, it can be encrypted with AES128 algorithm
using a 20 chars passphrase and it will be recognized by dyne:bolic at
every boot to let you find back your files.
All this is possible with dyne:bolic in a few clicks! check out the
'taschino' graphical installer included in the config tools and create
your nest - and if you want to get rid of it it's very simple, just
delete the dynebol.nst file in the root directory of the partition where
you installed it!
The NESTING will keep being a stable solution for data storage in
dyne:bolic, tools for managing the nest and customize its attributes are
allready under development.

:: BUGREPORT
if you experience problems with the boot of dyne:bolic please help us
making it better for you and all the other users! it's easy now, just
get online after booting and send automatically a bugreport with a
simple command from console or terminal: db-bugreport
this will send your hardware configuration via mail to developers,
making them able to detect the problem and fix it in next releases!
