Student demonstration in the netherlands forbidden: 7 students arrested!

Last week (Friday 8 Nov) mayor Deetman from The Hague refused to give
students permission to demonstrate in the Dutch city of the Hague. The
demonstration was scheduled to take place today (Tuesday 12. Nov) and the students
decided to move the main demonstration to Amsterdam. In the Hague there was a
silent march of 50 students. 7 of them got arrested for giving people hand outs
(flyers) at the central station of the Hague....

The Police stated that about 7000 students demonstrated against budget cuts
(378 million Euros in the coming 4 years) and higher tution fees in Amsterdam
today.

This demonstration was planned for the city the Hague (where the Dutch
parliament is). But mayer Deetman had forbidden the demonstration because the
students could not garantie that less than 1000 students would attend. The mayer
had also fears that the demonstration could turn violent. 

To show their anger about the complete cut of student democratic rights by
the MUB law (Which was implemented a couple of years ago) and the "shut your
mouth" policy by forbidding student demonstrations 50 students held a silent
march through the city of the Hague. The students had their mouth taped and
painted their face white. The police ended the demonstration immediatly and
arrested 7 students for giving people flyers with a protest text about the
forbidden demonstration.

In the city of Groningen there was another student demonstration with 600
students.

Please send protest mails to mayor Deetman of the Hague to protest against
the repressive policy by forbidding the student demonstration and demand the
release of the 7 arrested students. Please mail a copy of the mail to the
critical students (kritische studenten)in Utrecht. You can send the critical
students a solidarity mail as well!
