In seguito alle pressanti e ripetute minacce di morte subite da Malalai a causa della sua attività parlamentare, la sua associazione (OPAWC, Organization of Promoting Afghan Women's Capabilities) ci ha chiesto di intervenire inviando lettere di protesta alle autorità afghane e internazionali. Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
I am writing to you because I am concerned to hear about the death threats against the member of the Afghan Parliament Ms Malalai Joya.
In the past few weeks she has received death threats via phone calls and in a number of cases directly. I am greatly worried about these threaths, and I am convinced that her life is in great danger - meanwhile the Afghan government is not taking any steps to ensure her security.
To my knowledge, and as reported by respected international organizations such as Human Rights Watch, the Afghan parliament which comprises warlords and fundamentalists who are directly or indirectly involved in gross violations of human rights in Afghanistan.
Ms Malalai Joya is a tenacious defender of the rights of the women and of the oppressed people. The international community admires and respects her for her work.
I respectfully request that you grant Ms Malalai Joya's safety, and I call upon you to use all your influence to stop all actions against her.
I urge you to take necessary and serious steps to make sure her life is safe and free from intimidation and harassment. I look forward to hearing from you about actions you have been able to take on this matter.
