There
is a very interesting essay of Emily Martin, titled
"Science and Women's Bodies: Forms of Anthropological Knowledgeî
part of ìBody/Politics. Women and the Discourses of Science",
edited by Mary Jacobus, Evelyn Fox Keller e Sally Shuttleworth, Routledge
1990. Itís interesting how it shows the different ways women
of different social classes describe menstruation and explain it to
younger ones. This research has influenced part of American feminism
to an extent that women of the Boston Group (those of ìUs and
our bodyî, so to speak and if Iím not wrong E. Martin belonged
to this group) decided at the end of the nineties, to republish the
bible-text of seventies feminism and took it this essay in great consideration,
changing completely the chapter on menstruation, trying to free it from
the scientific-patriarchal vision and instead giving voice to the variety
of different ways of living and describing it.
If I succeed in finding anything else between the mountain of photocopied
papers, Iíll gladly let you know. If you canít find this
essay, I can photocopy it for you.
Regardless of my unstable , I seem to remember that Erica Jong in "Paura
di volare" (Fear to fly) talked of a tribal group in which men
had to lick womenís pussyes during their period. Quite a normal
thing you might think, but the curious thing, if Iím not wrong,
was that Long talked of it as a punishment or menÖ
One last thing. In the beautiful text 'Le figlie di Egalia' of Gert
Brantenberg, an ironic representation of patriarchy seen the other way,
womenís power (same as the well known patriarchy) is based on
menstruation, so young girls go waving sanitary pads around in the face
of young men yelling ìI have it and you donítîÖand
from there a series of really funny things that I donít want
to anticipate
